Terms of use
Good Ears is a practice tool made and run by Christopher Rouxel. These terms are short because the app asks little of you, and they say plainly what it asks.
What it costs
- Today, nothing. Every feature is free to use. If a paid plan is ever introduced, the price is shown before you pay, nothing you have already stored is taken away, and the levels you have beaten stay beaten.
What you can expect
- The app is provided as is. It may change, break, or go offline without notice. Do not rely on it as the only record of your practice — the practice log can be printed, and the library is in your own browser and, if you connect it, your own Drive.
- Grading is an honest best effort by a computer listening through a microphone. It is not a teacher, and it can be wrong — particularly with background noise, chords, or an instrument it was not designed for.
- Reading a photographed page is a best effort too. The review exists so that you check the result before it becomes something you practise from; a read you did not check is a read you should not trust.
What is asked of you
- Only upload music you have the right to use. The library exists so you can practise from books you own. Sheet music is usually copyrighted; photographing your own copy for your own practice is one thing, and redistributing it is another. Pages you add stay on your device unless you correct them (below), so this is a matter of your own use, not something the app polices.
- The app itself is not yours to copy. Good Ears — the software, the notation, the reader and the model weights it runs on — is proprietary and belongs to Christopher Rouxel. You may use it; you may not copy it, resell it, scrape it, reverse-engineer it, or use it to build a competing service. Recorded sounds and other third-party material carry their own licences, listed on the credits page.
- Do not attempt to disrupt the service or use it to store or transmit anything unlawful.
- Accounts are for people. Please do not automate sign-ups.
Your music, and what teaches the reader
- What you upload stays yours. A page you photograph is read and handed back; the app takes no rights in it and keeps no copy, with one exception you choose.
- Corrections teach the reader. When you check a read line by line, each line you mark right, fix or skip — and, with the first of them, the page image — is sent to the trainer and kept, so that the reader learns the books and cameras it gets wrong. The review says so on the page. By marking lines you allow those corrections and that page to be used to train and evaluate the reader; they are not published, shown to other players, or sent to anyone else. Ask and they are deleted.
Liability
To the extent the law allows, Christopher Rouxel is not liable for any loss arising from use of this app — including lost practice history, an incorrect grade, a misread page, or the service becoming unavailable.
Ending things
You can stop using Good Ears at any time; clearing your browser data removes what is stored locally. Ask and any account, its practice history and any corrections it sent will be deleted. Good Ears may end or suspend an account that breaks these terms.
Changes
If these terms change, the change is dated in the app’s changelog and shown here. Continuing to use the app after a change means accepting it.
